About my work

I'm not entirely sure how each idea comes to me...it just does. Often it's my most random thoughts that become the best creations. It might not be a complete image I have in mind, maybe a new design for trousers or boots, but, after a few days I will have in my hands a new character looking up at me. Some are ready to be staged in glass boxes, others left for you to pose how you wish and one or two that I will have grown fond of and can't imagine parting with.
All of them have a felted head and hand stitched clothing, cut and designed by me. About 90% of all my fabric and ribbon is recycled/reused. Occasionally I will have something very specific in mind and if a wander through charity shops or car boots doesn't suffice, I will journey to a 'proper' fabric shop.
This can prove to be very alarming for my finances!

About me

Married to artist Rob Heard. We live in a timber framed house he designed and built himself, on the edge of Exmoor close to the sea.
We have 4 children Joe, Lily, Rose and Daisy.
I studied art specialising in textiles and went on to be a wardrobe assistant for Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and The Edinburgh Festival. I have also been display assistant, window dresser, interior designer and wedding planner.

As a child, mother would ask what I would like for Christmas and I always replied 'a doing thing' as in something to make. Some of those 1970's kits mum bought me would be deemed very unsuitable for children now! Always frustrated when we didn't have the bits for the latest Blue Peter project, I now have a work room full of bits I have collected over the years.
It's heaven.
